Troubleshooting Tips For Your Water Softener

Posted on

The water softener softens your water and helps to take out the impurities from your water that may lead to stains on your plumbing fixtures, your home, and your clothing, or cause other issues such as dry skin and hair. If you have a water heater in your home, it's more than likely a necessary part of your home. If your water softener has stopped working, you may notice all of these things happening again in your home. If the water softener has stopped working properly, you need to know how to troubleshoot your system. Read on for some troubleshooting tips.

Check The Salt Level

Your water softener needs salt in order to work as it should. If the water softener doesn't have enough salt in it, it's going to work improperly. The salt helps to balance out the water, giving you clean water with fewer minerals and hard water content. If you notice a buildup again of hard water, you should check the salt content in the appliance. You also need to be sure you are using the right type of salt and that the content of salt is enough in the water. You should also keep a close eye on the salt in the tank to be sure it isn't creating a salt bridge or mushing up.

Check The Drains

The drains on the water softener need to be checked to be sure they aren't clogged. They may become clogged with time from the water or from the salt, or they could get clogged for other reasons as well. Check the drains and ensure they are not clogged. If they are, you need to take the time to unclog them.

Inspect The Resin Bed

Inspect the resin bed on your tank to be sure it is not dirty. If it is, you need to drain the tank and clean it out. The resin bed could also be past its prime and should be replaced with a new one. The tank itself could also be worn out, or other parts of your system may be too worn out. Inspecting the tank often is necessary.

If your water softener is not working as it should, there could be any number of issues wrong with the system. Hire a professional appliance repairman to get the system working again to ensure your water is clean and you don't have the issues you once did with hard water.
